La traduzione, come metodo di esercizio nell’apprendimento di una lingua, farà sicuramente parte della vecchia scuola, però, inserita in un contesto più vario di apprendimento, soprattutto con feedback in tempo reale, può sempre essere un utile esercizio di allenamento.

La prima domanda dev’essere past simple, Alberta, in quanto si interessa espressamente di “quando”. Inoltre le notizie devono provenire da loro e non da altri (da parte loro). L’espressione in questo caso è “to hear from”. “Last” andrebbe messo prima del verbo e senza “time”. In questo modo ti viene fuori la domanda:
“When did you last hear from them?”
La seconda domnada potrebbe anche andare, ma semplicemente con “around” invece di “in the surroundings” (con “in the ” ci starebbe “area” = “in the area”).
Invece di “why”, la formula prevista sarebbe, “What makes you think…?”

Ciao Lollina. L’elaborazione della prima parte è un po’ insolito, ma perfettamente comprensibile. La seconda parte va benissimo. Guarda qualche altra versione nei commenti per la prima parte. 🙂

Carlo, la prima parte va benissimo (anche se potresti farla con “to hear from”).
Nella seconda parte, non va bene “is getting”, sia come tempo sia come scelta di verbo. Serve qui un verbo che dà l’idea di “costringere” qualcuno a fare/pensare qualcosa, messo al present simple però.
Ti viene qualche idea?

Nadia, se cominci con “When was the last time…” la parte interrogativa è già fatto e il verbo successivo dev’essere articolato nella forma affermativa: “When was the last time you had…” Inoltre, metterei “any” prima di “news”.
Ma, l’espressione da usare qui è “to hear from somebody”. Così verrebbe:
“When did you last hear from them?” oppure:
“When was the last time you heard from them?”
La seconda domanda va benissimo. 🙂

Anita, con la formula che hai scelta per la prima domanda, dovresti rielaborare la frase in questo modo:
“When did you last have any news from them?” oppure:
“When was the last time you had any news from them?”
Ma, l’espressione da usare qui è “to hear from somebody”. Così verrebbe:
“When did you last hear from them?” oppure:
“When was the last time you heard from them?”
Nella seconda domanda invece, è quel ‘let’ che non funziona. Qui ci vuole il senso di “cosa ti ‘costringe’ a pensare”. Questo viene con “make”, non con “let”:
“What makes you think…?”
Poi, perché “could be” e non semplicemente “are”?
In ogni caso, con “could be”, l’avverbio “still” dovrebbe venire in mezzo: “could still be”.
Detto tutto questo: coraggio! La tua versione è comunque comprensibile, è già questo è importante!
Forse l’errore più significativo è l’uso do “let” (lasciare, permettere) invece di “make” (spingere, costringere).

I would use ‘to hear from’ in the first part and ‘around’ at the end of the second part.
