Translation Exercise • 5

Buon divertimento!

Puoi esercitarti quanto vuoiQUI

No one cares what you do, as long as you do it without bothering anyone.

    1. Your version doesn’t quite work, Anna, because it is lacking a negative element in the second part. Here are the possibilities:
      1) …as long as you don’t disturb anyone
      2) …as long as you disturb nobody (corretta ma non suona bene)
      3) …as long as you do it without disturbing anyone (più vicina all’origianale)

In ogni caso vedrei “No one cares what you do…” all’inizio, in quanto più vicino all’idea di “a nessuno importa” che è più il senso della frase.

      1. Very nice, Manu.
Perhaps instead of “about” I would say “interested in” or even nothing which is possible before “what, who, when” etc: “…interested what you do…”

  2. Nobody is interested in what you do, unless you do it without bothering anybody.
    Can this work, Teacher?

    1. It doesn’t work fully, Anita, because “unless” provides an exception to the premise. In this case, the premise is that “nobody is interested” so the exception would be if you actually bothered somebody. You would therefore have to say:
“Nobody is interested in what you do, unless you bother somebody.”
What you need here is “as long as” (or “provided”) which simply underlines the ongoing condition of the premise.

    Hello prof,
Nobody cares about what you are doing, provided that you do it without disturbing anybody

    1. Interesting version, Roby, and perfectly correct.
I would suggest eliminating “about” in the first part and sticking to the present simple (la frase è abbastanza generale, credo).

No-one is interested in what you do as long as you do it without bothering anyone.
