Bob lived with his dog, Spot, in a small flat in Manchester. On Saturdays, he worked in a local computer shop. He started work at 9 o’clock and finished at 5 o’clock. He usually walked from his flat and reached the shop just before opening time. That morning, when he arrived, he opened the door as usual, switched on the lights and waited for his boss to arrive.
No more than five minutes passed, when Bob’s boss called to say that he was not feeling very well. He asked Bob if he would mind looking after the shop on his own. The news surprised Bob and worried him a bit, but he listened carefully to his boss’s instructions and hoped he would remember everything.
Later on in the morning, a pretty young girl entered the shop saying that she wanted a new laptop and that she needed it to be as powerful as possible. She explained that she used the computer every day, that it served her for her job, and that she also played a lot of computer games. Bob wasted no time. He showed her some of the top models and helped her to choose the best one.
Just as she was about to pay, an unexpected thing happened. Her purse slipped from her hand and landed on the floor. Bob reached down immediately, picked it up, and handed it back to her. The girl’s smile, as she thanked him, melted his heart.
Bob looked at her more closely and realized that he really liked her. So he decided to take his chance and asked her what her name was. She told him her name was Helen and talked to him about her family and her job. She seemed to like Bob too, and stayed in the shop until it was almost lunchtime.
Just before lunch, they exchanged phone numbers, and as Helen turned to leave the shop, Bob moved quickly towards the door and pulled it open for her. He followed her with his eyes as she crossed the road and he smiled happily when she stopped for a moment and waved at him. He watched her until she disappeared from sight and then closed the door.
He planned to call her that evening and wondered if it was finally his lucky day.
