On this day, the British sea explorer and navigator, Henry Hudson, left London on the 55-ton ship Discovery on his fourth and fateful journey to find a northwest passage from Europe to Asia via the arctic archipelago of Canada. On 2nd August, the ship entered Hudson Bay and excitement rose, but in the following months no passage to Asia was to be found. In November, the ship became trapped in the ice in James Bay, and the crew moved ashore for the winter. In the spring of 1611, at the prospect of continuing the search, most of the crew mutinied, and Hudson, his teenage son John, and seven members of the crew were set adrift with a few supplies on a small boat on 22nd June. They were never seen or heard of again.
