The Battle of Waterloo

18th June 1815

On this day, the French Imperial Army under the command of Napoleon I was defeated by two armies of the Seventh Coalition in the Battle of Waterloo. The Seventh Coalition was formed quickly after Napoleon’s return to power in March 1815 and was headed by field marshal Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington and Field Marshal Blücher. Near the village of Waterloo, Wellington withstood repeated attacks by the French throughout the afternoon of 18th June, and when the Prussians broke through on the French right flank, the Anglo-allied army repulsed the Imperial Guard, and the French army was routed. According to Wellington, the battle was “the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life.” Napoleon abdicated four days later, and coalition forces entered Paris on 7 July.
