The Disappearance of Amelia Earhart

2nd July 1937

On this day, somewhere over Howland Island in the central Pacific Ocean, the aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart disappeared, together with her navigator Fred Noonan, while attempting to become the first woman to complete a circumnavigational flight of the globe. Amelia had already become a celebrity in 1928 as the first female passenger to cross the Atlantic by airplane, and in 1932 as the first woman to make a nonstop solo transatlantic flight. It is generally believed that her plane ran out of fuel before reaching Howland Island and that it fell into the ocean in that area. She was officially declared dead about 18 months later. The mysterious nature of her disappearance and the fact that her airplane has never been found, has led to speculation and conspiracy theories about the outcome of the flight.
