Mae West is banned from NBC Radio

27th December 1937

On this day the actress Mary Jane “Mae” West was banned from NBC Radio after her performance in the radio sketch ‘Adam and Eve’. Many conservative religious groups took exception to her outspoken use of sexuality and sexual imagery being broadcast directly into American living rooms on a popular family-friendly radio program. Considered a sex symbol, Mae West was known for her breezy sexual independence and her bawdy double entendres, often delivered in a husky contralto voice. She was active in vaudeville and on stage in New York City before moving to Los Angeles to begin a career in the film industry.
