Valley of Belice Earthquake in Sicily

14th January 1968

On this day in the valley of Belice in the western part of the island of Sicily, a series of violent earthquakes brought death and destruction to a number of towns and villages, killing 231 people and injuring a further 623 (officially). Other estimates give more than 400 dead with over 1000 injured, and an estimated 100,000 people made homeless. Lack of disaster relief planning, coupled with excessive bureaucracy, meant that a year later many hundreds of people were still living in tents, and the prefabricated houses that had been paid for, were yet to appear. Nine years later 60,000 refugees were still living in temporary accommodation.
