On this day a wandering Scotsman named Roderick Maclean attempted to assassinate Queen Victoria with a pistol. Victoria was travelling back to Windsor Castle from a visit to Buckingham Place in London and had just got into her carriage at Windsor train station with Princess Beatrice when the shot rang out. Maclean was quickly disarmed by a photographer and some Eton schoolboys, and was arrested by the local police. At his trial two months later, he was found ‘not guilty but insane’, and spent the rest of his life in the Broadmoor Asylum. Queen Victoria was not happy with the wording of the verdict and had an Act passed the following year which changed the form of such verdicts to ‘guilty but insane’. During her long reign, Queen Victoria survived eight assassination attempts.
