First African American Newspaper Published

16th March 1827

Prima pagina del giornale 'Freedom's Journal' pubblicato per la prima volta da afro-americani.

On this day, “Freedom’s Journal”, the first United States newspaper owned and operated by African Americans, began publishing in New York City. It was a time when journals were becoming an important aspect of the African-American protest tradition, arguing for sociopolitical uplift within the community, and the founders intended to appeal to free Blacks throughout the United States who were desperately attempting to elevate their literacy rate. The newspaper opened with the following words: “In presenting our first number to our Patrons, we feel all the diffidence of persons entering upon a new and untried line of business. But a moment’s reflection upon the noble object…..encourage us to come boldly before an enlightened publick. For we believe, that a paper devoted to the dissemination of useful knowledge among our brethren…..must meet with the cordial approbation of every friend to humanity.”
