On this day, the horse race known as the ‘2000 Guineas Stakes’ was first run at Newmarket on the Rowley Mile (1.6 km). Established by the Jockey Club under the direction of Sir Charles Bunbury, it is a flat race on a straight track and is one of the five Classic races and the opening leg of the Triple Crown. The 1809 race was won by a horse called Wizard ridden by the jockey Bill Clift. By the mid-1860s, the ‘2000 Guineas Stakes’ was regarded as one of Britain’s most prestigious races for three-year-old horses. The race was named according to the original prize funds (2000 guineas = £2,100), but a win today is worth £523,750!
