The Fairy Tales of Hans Andersen

8th May 1835

On this day, the first installment of Hans Christian Andersen’s “Fairy Tales Told for Children” was published by C.A. Reitzel in Copenhagen. It was Andersen’s first foray into the fairy tale genre and was not met with great enthusiasm by the first Danish reviewers who disliked the chatty, informal style and apparent immorality, since children’s literature was meant to educate rather than to amuse. By the time he started his third series in 1845, he was celebrated throughout Europe, although his native Denmark still showed a certain resistance. Shortly before his death on 4th August 1875, Andersen consulted a composer about the music for his funeral, saying: “Most of the people who will walk after me will be children, so make the beat keep time with little steps.”
