The Assassination of King Umberto I of Italy

29th July 1900

On this day, the Italian anarchist, Gaetano Bresci, assassinated King Umberto I of Italy. In the 1880s, the importation of cheap grain from the USA quickly pushed small farmers like the Bresci family into poverty and Gaetano was forced at an early age to take up work as a weaver. His experiences of exploitation in the workplace led him to join the Italian Anarchist Movement. After clashes with the police, he decided to emigrate to the USA where he became active in the immigrant anarchist movement. When he received news of the protests in Milan that were violently suppressed by the Royal Italian Army in the Bava Beccaris Massacre, Bresci bought a gun and travelled back to Italy. Holding Umberto responsible for the massacre, he shot the King as he was leaving Monza Stadium after attending a gymnastics competition. On his immediate capture, Bresci said, “I did not kill Umberto. I have killed the King. I killed a principle.”
