On this day, the first ever international beauty contest was held at the Pier Hippodrome in Folkestone, Kent. The idea was the brainchild of the Edwardian entrepreneur Robert Forsyth, the managing director of the Pier who did a great amount to provide entertainment for the town. Although there had been May Queens and beauty competitions before that time, Forsyth’s stroke of genius lay in devising an international competition. The picture above shows the contestants from: (left to right) England, France, Denmark, Germany, Italy and Spain. The first winner was Nellie Jarman from London. Although pleasing to many, the competition was also contested by the suffragettes who took up the front rows in the stalls wearing large sailor hats with a red band on which was written ‘Votes for Women!’
