Lord Walsingham’s Red Grouse Record

30th August 1888

On this day, Thomas de Grey, 6th Lord Walsingham, is recorded as having shot and killed 1,070 red grouse in one day. Although an accomplished naturalist and a student of Micro-Lepidoptera (the family of tiny moths and butterflies), Lord Walsingham was also known as a crack shot. Grouse hunting is usually conducted by beaters who walk through the moors on ‘drives‘, flushing birds towards shooters stationed in blinds. That was the technique Lord Walsingham used when he established his record in just over twelve hours and in a series of 20 drives. Red Grouse, also known as the ‘King of Gamebirds’, is famous for the quality and taste of the meat and for its nutritional value. Fortunately today’s priorities are on sustainability and moorland preservation.
