On this day, at Nottingham’s annual Goose Fair, rioting broke out when city residents attempted to stop Lincolnshire merchants from taking away local cheeses that they had bought at the fair to sell in their own county. Later known as the Nottingham Cheese Riot, it came in the wake of a poor harvest which had naturally led to rising prices and fear of an imminent food shortage. Speculation was rife and Nottingham residents were loath to see local products leave their territory. Violence soon broke out and rioters proceeded to loot a large quantity of cheese throughout Nottingham. Shop windows were broken and hundreds of cheese wheels were thrown and rolled down the streets, even knocking over the mayor, Robie Swann, as he attempted to restore order. Government troops were eventually called in and opened fire on the rioters, killing one man and wounding several others.
