On this day, the mathematics prodigy, Augusta Ada King, more commonly known as Ada Lovelace, the only legitimate child of poet Lord Byron and reformer Anne Isabella Milbanke, met the British mathematician, Charles Babbage. At the time, Babbage was working on his Analytical Engine which, although it was never constructed, has been recognised in retrospect as a general-purpose computer which anticipated the essential features of a modern electronic computer. Babbage is therefore known as the father of computers, and Ada Lovelace is credited with several computing firsts for her collaboration with him. She also developed a vision of the capability of computers to go beyond mere calculating, while many others, including Babbage himself, focused only on those capabilities.
