Great Siege of Gibraltar Ends

7th February 1783

On this day, the Great Siege of Gibraltar finally came to an end after three years, seven months and two weeks. The siege was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the American Revolutionary War and was the largest battle in the war in terms of combatants (60,000 Spanish and French versus 5,000 British). On three separate occasions during the siege, British ships slipped past the naval blockade and succeeded in supplying the small British contingent with essential food and arms. An attempt to take Gibraltar by land, followed by a final combined sea and land attack were both disastrous failures and gave Britain an even stronger hand at the negotiating table when it came to the signing of the Peace of Paris on 3rd of September the same year.
