On this day, Mary ‘Mamah’ Borthwick Cheney, her two children, John and Martha, and four employees were brutally murdered in what would come to be known as the Taliesin Massacre. Mary was the mistress of the renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and Taliesin was the ‘love nest‘ that he designed and built in the rolling hills of Wisconsin in an attempt to keep their controversial love story away from prying eyes. On the fateful day, while Frank was away on business, one of his employees, Julian Carlton, who had recently been told that he was to be made redundant, went on a rampage on his last day of work, killing all seven people with an axe and setting fire to the villa before swallowing acid in an attempt to commit suicide. With his throat badly damaged, Carlton died of starvation before he could stand trial.
