The Failed President Ford Assassination

5th September 1975.

On this day, Lynette Alice ‘Squeaky’ Fromme, a devoted member of the notorious Manson Family, attempted to assassinate President Ford. Fromme had moved to Sacramento to be close to Manson, who for a time had been incarcerated in nearby Folsom for the infamous Tate and LaBianca murders in Los Angeles in 1969. Although Fromme did not appear to hold any particular grudge towards President Ford, he clearly represented an establishment that she and the Manson clan despised. That morning, the President had just left the Senator Hotel and was walking to Governor Jerry Brown’s nearby office when Fromme pulled out a pistol from under her Red Riding Hood-style cloak. Security agents seized her immediately and she received a life sentence under a 1965 law that made attempted presidential assassinations a federal crime.
