Shiza Shahid – Ingliando

On this day, the recently-formed progressive rock band, King Crimson, released their iconic first-ever studio album “In the Court of the Crimson King” on the Island Records label. The band, formed by Robert Fripp, Michael Giles, Greg Lake, Ian McDonald and Peter Sinfield, first became known to the general public when they were asked to open for the Rolling Stones free concert in Hyde Park, London in July 1969. The album was King Crimson’s most commercially successful album, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest progressive rock albums ever released. The band drew inspiration from a wide variety of music, incorporating elements of classical, jazz, folk, heavy metal, gamelan, blues, industrial, electronic, and experimental music. King Crimson also exerted a strong influence on the early 1970s progressive rock movement, including on contemporaries such as Yes and Genesis, and continues to inspire subsequent generations of artists across multiple genres.

On this day, a Taliban gunman shot and critically wounded the young Pakistani schoolgirl, Malala Yousafkai, as she rode home from school on a bus in her native district, Swat. Although only 15 years old at the time of the shooting, Malala’s outspoken defence of girls’ rights to education and her nomination for the International Children’s Peace Prize by activist Desmond Tutu, had already made her a high-profile target for the Taliban. After a long and difficult recovery, Malala became an even more prominent activist, co-founding the Malala Fund, a non-profit organisation, with Shiza Shahid. In 2013, she co-authored “I Am Malala“, an international best seller, as well as receiving the Sakharov Prize, and in 2014, at the age of just 17, she was the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize with Kailash Satyarthi of India. Today, Malala’s advocacy has grown into an international movement, and according to former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, she has become Pakistan’s “most prominent citizen”.
