Zuccotti Park – Ingliando

On this day, the left-wing populist movement “Occupy Wall Street” began its protest in Zuccotti park in the financial district of New York City. The protest took the form of a sit-in and lasted until 15th November when police in riot gear began removing protesters from the park, arresting some 200 people in the process, including a number of journalists. Having been forced out of the park, protesters focused on occupying banks, corporate headquarters, board meetings, foreclosed homes, college and university campuses, and social media. The primary motivations for the protest were economic inequality, capitalism, corporate greed, big finance and the influence of money in politics, and was the result of public distrust in the private sector after the Great Recession in the United States. The slogan, “We are the 99%”, refers to income and wealth inequality in the U.S. between the wealthiest 1% and the rest of the population.
