La richiesta mi è arrivata diversi anni fa da parte di un capo scout che voleva una traduzione in inglese di un testo siciliano che i suoi ragazzi potessero recitare all’estero. Non so se il suo progetto è mai andato in porto ma a me è rimasta questa mia versione in inglese di “Lu Cummattimentu di Orlandu e Rinardu” di Nino Martoglio (Centona). Non mi ricordo più a che punto nella faccenda ho preso la decisione di fare la mia versione con una metrica precisa e in rima baciata ma è stata una decisione al limite della follia, soprattutto considerando che non era previsto nessuna ricompensa per il lavoro svolto né per il tempo dedicato. Nonostante questo, devo ammettere che la sfida linguistica è stata molto stimolante, istruttiva e anche divertente. Per quanto riguarda il risultato finale lascio valutare a voi…

The Duel of Orlando and Rinaldo

Just look what one hair of a woman can do!
Vidìti quantu po’ ‘n pilu di fimmina!
Two knights, two pillars of strength, heaven knows,
Dui palatini, ca su’ du’ pileri,
for love of Angelica’s beautiful face

have become the most deadly of foes.
su’ addivintati du’ nimici fêri.

Here they are in the battle-field, man to man,
Ecculi in campu, unu contra all’autru
like wolves they deliver each terrible blow;
ca cercanu mangiàrisi ppi lupi;
they’ve been fighting like this for almost three days…
avi quasi tri jorna ca cummattunu…
~ Too rough for a mere puppet show!
~ Oh, non è cosa d’òpira di pupi!

This story I tell comes from history’s annals,
Chista ca vi raccuntu è vera storia
a record of all that was seen and was heard,
scritta sopra dei fatti naturali
written down by a monk who was there at the time

and witnessed each action, each word.

While Orlando at one point was terribly tired,
Orlando a ‘n certu punto era stanchissimu,
Rinaldo still managed to give of his best,

seven odd hundred in all?

“Do you think I don’t know that with all of the money
“Ti pari ca non sacciu che coi pìcciuli
You happened to find in your knapsack that day,
che ci truvasti dintra il saccappano
you financed your Castle of Montalbano,
ti fabbricasti il tanto sbrendidissimo
in all of its splendid array?”
castello anticu to’ di Montarbano?”

And all the time flashing his sword in the air,
E ‘ntantu furriò la spada all’aria
he gave the most terrible blow that he could,
e desi un corpo d’accussì trementi,
and Rinaldo, if he hadn’t jumped to one side,

would surely have been gone for good.

Rinaldo, however, soon sought his revenge

“Just wait there a moment, I’ve still got the spirit
“Aspetta, aspetta, ca m’abbasta l’animo
to deal you a blow with Fusberta,” he cried,
ccu ‘n corpu sulu della mia Fusberta
“that will shorten and straighten that elephant’s trunk!“
di apparaggiarti questa tua probosciti!…“
So saying, he stepped to one side.
Così dicendo si ‘nquartò alla sverta

He started to turn his sword up above him,
Fici girari l’arma comu anìmmolo
like wool on a spinner he made the blade fly,
e quannu s’addunò che il sulo vento
and when he had freshened the air all around him
che procedeva arrifiscava l’aria,
He let his sword fall from the sky!…..
fici calari lesto il suo fendento!…

Orlando succeeded in blocking the blow,
Orlando arriniscìu a parallo subito,
he’d felt the air move through the chinks in his armour,
chè avendo ‘ntiso pria la friscanzana,
and realizing what was in store, he’d got ready
s’aveva quartiato e in modo energeco
and raised his great Trullintana.
aveva arzata la sua Trullintana.

When Orlando discovered that in his attack
E quannu s’addunò che nello scìnneri
Rinaldo had pierced the ground with his sword,
la spata di Rinardo avìa azziccato
and that try as he might he could not get it out,
dintra il tirrenu e non puteva nésciri
Orlando said, “Great Holy Lord!
dissi: “Putenti Dio sacramintato!

“Rinaldo, your moment has finally come,
“Ecco arriva l’ora tua prenobisi,
get ready your coffin, you’ll need it at last!”
Rinaldo, ti po’ fari il tuo tabuto!”
And then with a blow of his terrible sword
E con un corpo di spatancia in súpira
he knocked him flat out on the grass.
lo buttò al suolo, quasi tramortuto.

“O vile wicked man,” Rinaldo retorted
“Ah, vili” dissi quello, nel sosìrisi
and jumped up again like a cat, quite unharmed,
comu si fòra un jattu suriano,
“Is this your chivalry, striking at me
“Questa è la tua omirtá, che voi ferìrimi
while I am quite clearly unarmed?
mentre che sono senza spata a mano?

“Ah, yes, I know you, you treacherous dog,
“Ah, sì, t’arricanuscio, arrifardissimo,
great coward and son of a…….. wench, shall we say,
potenti vile e figlio di… bagiana,
wasn’t it you who set up the trap
non fusti tu ca ci facisti il traino
at the Adalmont fountain that day?
ad Adalmonti, sutta la funtana?

“Take up your stance and let’s see if you’re able
“Prènditi la distanza e se sei abeli
to fight face to face, to punch and to grapple,
vénicci facci a facci e pugno a pugno,
my fists will reduce your pale blotted face
che t’ariddúcio questa facci giàlina
till it’s worse than an old cooking apple.”
e tappïata peggio d’un cutugno!”

“Alright, great soldier, I’m ready when you are,
“Sì sbavaldoso che tu sei» ci arrébrica,
just give me the word,” said Orlando the knight,
Orlando paladino, “eccomi quane,
“I can’t wait to show you my terrible thrust
ti voglio far provare il mio terribeli
and the strength of these hands in a fight.”
brando e la forza di codeste mane.”

Both of them then stepped aside and drew breath
E nel contempo tutti e due s’arrassano,
and recovered their strength for a minute or two,
pigliano ciato e con le quattro braccia
then lifting their swords in the air with both hands
sollevano le spate sopra i cranii
they started to threaten anew.
e ognun si parti in atto di minaccia.

Their two swords crossed, the blow was tremendous,
Succedi l’urto, i due spate s’incrociano,
their helmets came off and were smashed in the fight,
sàtano l’elmi suoi ben presto rotti,
together they fell to the ground, dazed and shaken,
e cadono storditi ambo all’unisono,
for seven whole days and nights!
per setti giorni intere e sette notti!
