  1. Hi Tony, but why “Heaven help you” and not “Heaven helps you”? Maybe have I misunderstood the meaning of the sentence?

    1. It’s a subjunctive form (one of the few remaining in English) that expresses a wish or desire; in this case the wish that Heaven (God) will help you. It’s a bit like “che Dio ti aiuti” in Italian. The full original was probably, “May Heaven help you.”

      1. P.S. When you use “maybe” in that way, use the affirmative form (it’s not really a question): “maybe I have misunderstood the meaning of the sentence?” and make it sound like a question with your voice.
