On this day, the world famous board game Monopoly was officially released by Parker Brothers in the United States. Although the origins of the game are generally accredited to a certain Charles Darrow, its true origins lie in another game called The Landlord’s game, patented by the leftwing feminist, Lizzy Magie in 1903. In an attempt to illustrate the shortcomings of the capitalist system, Magie’s game had two sets of rules: an anti-monopolist set which rewarded everybody when wealth was created, and a monopolist set whose goal was to create monopolies and crush opponents. Little did she know at the time that only the monopolist set of rules would be used when the game was later released as Monopoly and that her brainchild was destined to become a global cultural phenomenon.
