Decimalisation of British Currency

15th February 1971

On this day, the United Kingdom finally decimalised its old currency of pounds, shillings and pence. Before this date, for 1200 years, the British pound sterling had been subdivided into 20 shillings, with each shilling subdivided into 12 pence, making a total of 240 pence to a pound. With decimalisation, the pound kept its old value and name, but the shilling was abolished, and the pound was divided into 100 new pence. The month of February was chosen for Decimal Day because it was the quietest time of the year for banks, shops and transport organisations. Extensive preparations and publicity campaigns organised by the British government, allowed the changeover to go smoothly, and the old coins were quickly taken out of circulation.
