On this day, William Keith Kellogg founded the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, better known today simply as Kellogg’s. William initially worked for his elder brother, the physician John, who was superintendent at the world-famous Battle Creek Sanitarium. The two brothers experimented with making easily-digested food for sick people, but when the experiments accidentally resulted in the modern corn flake, John was only interested in feeding his patients whereas William saw the commercial possibilities of their invention. The two brothers fell out and William set up his own company. In 1921, after a legal battle with his brother, William won the exclusive rights to the Kellogg’s name which soon became a household name and a huge international success, manufacturing and marketing in over 180 countries.
