The Birth of the Pony Express

13th April 1860

On this day, the first westbound Pony Express rider arrived in Sacramento, California, having completed the 2,961 km journey in just ten days. The eastbound rider arrived in St. Joseph, Missouri, two days later. In the days before the telegraph or an efficient railway, with ships and stagecoaches taking at least a month, the Pony Express seemed miraculously fast. There were about 186 Pony Express stations along the route, about 16 to 24 km apart, and at each station, the express rider would change to a fresh horse. The riders changed about every 120–160 km and rode day and night. Although the Pony Express went bankrupt in 18 months and was replaced by a faster telegraph service, it was soon romanticised as part of the lore of the Old West.
