The Birth of the Impressionists

15th April 1874

On this day, an art exhibition by the Société anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs, etc., a group of artists who had been rejected by the official Paris Salon, opened at 35 Boulevard des Capucines, the studio of the famous photographer Nadar. The exhibition included, among others, artists such as Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, and Edgar Degas. On April 25, the satirical magazine ‘Le Charivari’ published a review of the exhibition by Louis Leroy entitled “L’Exposition des impressionnistes” in which a fictitious dialogue gives rise, somewhat facetiously, to the term ‘impressionists’. Although the exhibition was a commercial failure, time would eventually reserve a special place in the history of art for the ‘Impressionists’.

  1. On this day, in 1452, the famous painter, Leonardo da Vinci, was born. I feel it my duty to record what happened in Italy , dear Tony

    1. Absolutely, Carla. In fact, I’m giving quite a lot of highlight space to Italy. However, I’m avoiding “births & deaths” as they tend to be more ‘biographical’. I prefer to report on specific historical events.

      1. You got it! I’ll tell you a secret: his nickname was RIDAN, can you imagine those two? NADIR and RIDAN! Mum’s the word, please, it’s our secret!
