The Mongolfiers’ First Hot Air Balloon Flight

4th June 1783

On this day in France, the Mongolfier brothers, Joseph and Étienne, gave the first public demonstration of their newly invented hot air balloon in an unmanned flight at Annonay, in front of a group of dignitaries from the états particuliers. The flight covered 2 km, lasted 10 minutes, and had an estimated altitude of 1,600–2,000 m. Word of their success spread quickly and Étienne went to Paris to make further demonstrations and to solidify the brothers’ claim to the invention of flight. Joseph, given his unkempt appearance and shyness, remained with the family. In September the same year, a flight was made carrying a sheep, a duck and a rooster, and in October, Étienne became the first human to lift off the Earth in a balloon.
