First Publication of One Piece

22nd July 1997

On this day, the Japanese manga One Piece, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, made its first appearance in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. It soon received great praise for the storytelling and world-building, as well as for its art, characterisation, and humour. It has since received many awards and is ranked by critics, reviewers, and readers as one of the best manga of all time. Oda’s interest in pirates began in his childhood, watching the animated series Vicky the Viking, which inspired him to want to draw a manga series about pirates. The reading of pirate biographies influenced Oda to incorporate the characteristics of real-life pirates into many of the characters in One Piece, such as his character Marshall D. Teach who is based on and named after the historical pirate Edward “Blackbeard” Teach. A live action TV series adaptation was released by Netflix in 2023.
