On this day, India’s first and only female prime minister and leader of the Indian National Congress party, Indira Ghandi, was assassinated by two of her own Sikh bodyguards. She was walking through her garden on her way to an interview with British filmmaker Peter Ustinov when the two bodyguards opened fire on her and then dropped their weapons and surrendered. The assassination was allegedly in revenge for Operation Blue Star in which Indira Ghandi ordered the Indian army to remove a large group of militant, pro-autonomy Sikhs from the Golden Temple in Punjab. The operation led to the deaths of many Sikh fighters and innocent pilgrims. Indira Ghandi’s death was mourned worldwide, with world leaders condemning the assassination, saying that her death would leave ‘a big emptiness‘ in international affairs.
