On this day, after being repeatedly arrested for his leadership activity in India’s independence movement, Mahatma Ghandi was arrested in Bombay on the serious charge of sedition. Having pleaded guilty to all charges and having requested the maximum penalty, he was sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in protesting the British colonial government in India. Released after two years for medical reasons, Ghandi continued to be a dominant figure in the independence movement, serving as an inspirational leader and organising acts of large-scale civil disobedience including boycotts of all things British. Ghandi lived to see India’s independence from Britain in 1947, but was assassinated the following year by a Hindu extremist.
