On this day, at 1:00 a.m. outside the Trans-Lux 52nd Street Theatre on Lexington Avenue in New York City, film director Billy Wilder shot the iconic scene where the breeze from the subway grating lifts Marilyn Monroe’s dress, exposing her legs. The scene was destined to be part of the 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch“. Unfortunately, the location and time of the shoot were leaked to the press, resulting in a massive crowd of 3,000 to 5,000 spectators and photographers. As a consequence, the footage was unusable due to the noise and excitement of the onlookers and Billy Wilder had to re-shoot the scene at 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles in order to get the footage that appears in the final film. The photographs, however, that were used for the film’s publicity were taken at the original location.
