On this day King Jugurtha of Numidia was led in chains through Rome in a triumphal procession for the Roman General Gaius Marius. Having outwitted the Romans for many years with a notable mixture of skill, cunning and treachery, King Jugurtha was finally betrayed by his father-in-law, King Bochus of Mauritania, and handed over to Sulla, General Marius’s lieutenant. After the triumphal procession through the streets of Rome, Jugurtha was thrown into Rome’s infamous underground prison, Tullianum, where he was set upon by other prisoners before starving to death after six days.
