Significato e uso in inglese: bit

A bit = un po’, un pochino, un pizzico, un pezzo, una parte

Forse qualcuno avrà già considerato una possibile connessione tra il sostantivo bit (pezzetto) e il passato del verbo to bite: bit. Bene, c’è. I miei antenati, infatti, usavano la parola bita per indicare un boccone, e quindi un pezzetto, inizialmente di cibo, ma poi di qualunque cosa. Da allora la parola bit(a) si è intrufolata in altri campi grammaticali come partitivo e come avverbio. Di conseguenza, non è sempre intuitivo né l’uso corretto né la comprensione della parola bit. Vediamo allora tutti i modi principali in cui questa piccola parola viene adoperata.

🔴 Un piccolo pezzo di qualcosa

• There are still some bits of glass on the floor.
• Ci sono ancora dei pezzi di vetro a terra.

• Tom used a bit of wood to keep the window open.
• Tom ha usato un pezzo di legno per tenere aperta la finestra.

• He threw some bits of toast out of the window for the birds.
• Buttò dei pezzi di pane tostato dalla finestra per gli uccelli.

• I need a bit of paper to write the message on.
• Mi serve un pezzo di carta per scrivere il messaggio.

N.B. In questo caso si può trovare bit anche nella forma plurale.

🔴 Una piccola quantità di qualcosa non numerabile ma tangibile

🔴Un po’di qualcosa numerabile e non tangibile

(In questi esempi un po’ più particolari a bit of a viene usato per mitigare il sostantivo successivo, quasi sempre un concetto negativo.)

• The whole organisation was a bit of a farce.

• I had a bit of a problem with the neighbour’s dog.

🔴 Per mitigare un aggettivo

• This tea is a bit weak. Who made it?

• Grandpa’s jacket is a bit too big for me. What a pity.

N.B. Questa forma è molto comune ma anche abbastanza informale. Quando serve maggiore formalità è meglio usare slightly (leggermente), rather (piuttosto), oppure somewhat (alquanto).

🔴 Per mitigare un aggettivo nella forma comparativa

• The weather was a bit better than we expected.
• Il tempo è stato un po’ meglio di come l’aspettavamo.

• Avrai bisogno di qualcosa un po’ più grande per tutti quei libri.

• Perhaps you’ll be a bit more cautious the next time.

• White walls would make the room a bit brighter.
• Muri bianchi renderebbero un po’ più luminosa la stanza.

• If only she’d been a bit more courageous.
