Buon divertimento!

  1. good evening tony I have a great question……as always

    1. It cost much more than peter was willing to pay for such a small apartment

can I translate with the past of would be willing to pay = would have been willing to pay?

    2. It cost much more than peter would have been willing to pay for such a small apartment

    thanks a lot

    1. Well, there’s nothing wrong with your second version, Giovanna, but I think it corresponds to a different Italian original:
I think this version is more hypothetical and less practical and direct than the version with “fosse disposto”, although both are, of course, possible.

    1. I’m not so sure about that “expensive/pay” combination, Paolo. It’s probably all right and it is comprehensible, but if you think about it you can “pay what something costs” but you can’t “pay an expensive”.
