INTRODUZIONE

The
murder
of Abel
[Genesis 4:1]
In the years that followed, Eve and Adam had a son,
And just a short time later, they had another one.
The boys were Cain and Abel, both were fit and strong,
And Eve and Adam taught them to tell what’s right from wrong.
They also taught them, early on, to thank and praise the Lord,
For he was their protector, worshipped and adored.
Since Abel was a shepherd, he offered God some meat,
But Cain, who was a farmer, could offer only wheat.
God was pleased with Abel and said he was the best,
He didn’t say a word to Cain, to put him to the test.
He wanted both the boys to see that if he scorned or flattered,
The goodness of their actions was all that really mattered.
Unfortunately Cain was proud and didn’t understand
The simple, subtle lesson that God had neatly planned.
He talked a while with Abel and then drew out his knife,
And in his great frustration, he took his brother’s life.
When God then asked for Abel, he casually replied,
“I’m not my brother’s keeper, I’ve not seen hair nor hide.”
At this the Lord got furious, he knew it wasn’t true,
He had to calm his anger and determine what to do.
In the end he banished Cain for ever and a day,
And put a mark upon him that would not wash away.
The mark would show all others the greatness of his sin,
So nobody would ever dream of trying to do him in.
Cain was really sorry he’d fallen out with God,
He bowed his head in penitence and went to live in Nod.
He found himself a wife there and quickly settled down,
He had a son called Enoch and built himself a town.
Meanwhile Eve and Adam had yet another son,
And as the years went passing by, a nation was begun.
