I think I would put “to” after “be” (the “to” from the infinitive “to throw”), but it’s not strictly essential.
Also, I would prefer “start again” at the end, but “start (it) afresh” is also possible.

Hi Giovanna, both versions are good.
I think the conditional version is better as it is closer to the original.
Regarding the position of “to”, it’s an interesting question. The rule says that you shouldn’t create a “split infinitive” so the “to” should stay with its verb. However, this rule is very frequently ignored by speakers especially when you have “just” which always sounds best immediately before the verb it refers to. I would use your first version, but since I’m not a youngster, I would say “start again” at the end. 😉

Di getto avevo scritto “start again”, dove “again” è certamente il termine che abbiamo sempre più comunemente usato nelle translations qui sul sito. Poi, ripensandoci, (prima di inviare ci penso sempre tante volte) mi è venuto in mente “start over”.
Ho fatto una ricerca molto veloce e ho trovato 2 risposte simili che indicavano per “start again” qualcosa che riprende dopo essersi fermato, mentre “start over” indica “cominciare da capo. A quel punto ho corretto e ho pure cercato di “memorizzare” la differenza. Dopo il tuo appunto però l’ho già dimenticata: ho verificato che le risposte che ho prese per buone riguardavano l’Americano, non l’Inglese quello vero.
Tutto è bene quello che finisce bene.

Interesting reflection, Paolo. In effect, I think “start again” can be, and is used for both instances.
“We’ll start again after lunch.” (riprendere un’attività già in corso)
“You’d better start again.” (cominciare da capo)
I think the context provides the difference in meaning.
