it’s a long time since I played tennis
ciao!
This formula is possible, Davide, but it would sound much better like this:
“It’s been a long time since I last played tennis.”
The alternative is to do as the others and use a standard “duration form” formula:
“I haven’t played tennis for a long time.”
🙂
Got it!👌
😀👍
I haven’t played tennis for ages.
Very good, Paolo. 🙂
P.S. How about, “I haven’t played tennis for yonks!”
Great suggestion, Tony! Let me tell you I haven’t used “yonks” for ages!!!
There’s no time like the present!
Hi Tony I try to give my version:
I’ve been playing tennis for a long time
Gaetano, I think you’ve missed out on the “negative” aspect of the original sentence.
tony, you’re absolutely right! I’ve been making a lot of these careless mistakes recently, and not just when I study English. I’m getting old
I haven’t been playing tennis for a long time
I haven’t played tennis for a long time!
This final version is the right one! 🙂
Yes, Tony, I looked at your comments and remembered that you said that the present perfect continuous is rarely used in negative sentences. See you later!
😀👍
i haven’t been playing tennis for long time
The idea is right, Nadia, but it’s very rare (and usually wrong) to use the present perfect continuous in the negative form.
N.B. “for a long time”
I didn’t know that the present perfect continuous is usually wrong in the negative senteces. Thanks a lot for your teachings!
It’s probably best never to use it in the negative because you can count the exceptions on one hand!
I haven’t played tennis for a long time
Top marks for you today, Giovanna. Well done. 🙂
thaks Tony,, ❤️
