INTRODUZIONE
Rebekah’s
trick
[Genesis 27:1]
Now Isaac’s sight was failing fast and he could hardly see,
He knew his body very soon would set his spirit free.
He shouted out for Esau and sent him, full of zeal,
To hunt some wild animals and cook a tasty meal.
The one where every slice of meat was steeped in spicy dressing,
He said if it was good enough, he’d give his son his blessing.
Esau ran off to the fields to see what he could find,
While Becky called for Jacob, she’d other plans in mind.
She told her son to fetch two goats from Isaac’s finest flock,
And she would do the cooking with spices from her stock.
“When Isaac tastes it,” she declared, “it’s you who will be blessed,
Isaac’s failing sight will help, my food will do the rest.”
Jacob wasn’t quite so sure, he said so to his mother,
“Chalk and cheese are more alike than I am to my brother.”
But Becky covered Jacob’s hands with hairy skins of goat,
And dressed him up from head to toe in Esau’s hunting coat.
She told him to relax and said, “Your father’s poor old eyes
Haven’t got the slightest chance of seeing through this disguise.”
So Jacob took the spicy meat and gave it to his dad,
“How quick you’ve been,” said Isaac, most gratified and glad.
But when he heard his son’s reply, he seemed to understand,
“What’s going on?” he asked himself, and reached for Jacob’s hand.
He sniffed at Esau’s hunting coat and stroked the goatskin glove,
Then, convinced, he blessed his son before the Lord above.
When Esau came home later, and brought his father’s meal,
The truth of what had happened made poor old Isaac reel.
Although he’d clearly been deceived by Jacob all along,
His blessing had been given, he couldn’t change the wrong.
Esau shouted furiously, “That’s now the second time
My brother has deceived me and taken what is mine!”
He asked his father desperately if he could still be blessed,
But Isaac couldn’t hide the fact that Jacob had the best.
With one hand on his shoulder and the other on his knee,
He quietly promised Esau that one day he’d be free.
But Esau was implacable and made his mind up fast
To put an end to Jacob’s life when Isaac breathed his last.
