Amundsen Reaches the South Pole

14th December 1911

On this day the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen, became the first man to reach the South Pole. When the English explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, arrived at the same spot 33 days later, he was heartbroken to find that there was already a tent with the Norwegian flag fluttering above it. He had lost the race and all the glory that went with it. All the members of Scott’s expedition died on the way back and their bodies, together with Scott’s diary, were not found until eight months later.

  1. Amundsen lost himself on June 18th, 1928 with his seaplan while he was looking for Italian explorer Umberto Nobile that had fallen down with his airship “Italia” on North Pole. The Amundsen’s body was never found again while Nobile was saved. The two explorers had arguing with each other, despite that Amundsen left to look for his colleague without hesitation.

  2. i didn’t know that Captain Robert had lost the race to the South Pole. I’ll sell my Scott bike as soon as possible!

        1. Seguimi un attimo, Paolo:

Se dice: “Exactly Tony, that’s what…” devi completare il verbo, “…that’s what I’ll do!”

Altrimenti dovresti dire soltanto: “Exactly Tony, I will!”

          🙂
