On this day the painter Vincent Van Gogh severed all or part of his left ear in a moment of delirium. Van Gogh had moved to Arles earlier that year with the idea, perhaps, of founding an art colony. While he was there, he invited the painter Paul Gauguin to stay with him. Gauguin eventually accepted and the two artists painted together for a while. However, their relationship soon turned sour, and after a bitter argument, Van Gogh severed his left ear with a razor. After bandaging the wound, he wrapped the severed ear in paper and entrusted it to a woman in a brothel that he and Gauguin both frequented. A few days later, Van Gogh was hospitalised with mental infirmity.

Many years ago I read a book about this painter.
There it was said that the yellow color he used in his paintings was a signal of his mental disease.

Really? I wonder, sometimes, how the ‘experts’ come to this kind of conclusion.

I found a typo, Tony. They reported “he wrapped the severed ear in paper and entrusted it to a woman in a brothel that he and Gauguin both frequented.” but it’s “he wrapped the severed ear in paper and entrusted it to a woman in a broth that he and Gauguin both used to sip.”

That was deliberate, Paolo. I was concerned that some of my more squeamish readers might find that a bit eerie!

Sounds good, but what about our beloved Hannibal Lecter? He’s one of your most faithful readers, and was him who suggested the recipe to Vincent…
I really hope he doesn’t notice the typo, or I would be worried about “my” own ears.

As my grandfather always used to say:
“It’s ‘ere today and gone tomorrow!”
