Van Gogh Shoots Himself in the Wheat Fields

27th July 1890

On this day, the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh, one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art, walked out into the wheat fields where he had been painting and shot himself in the chest. The bullet was not fatal and Van Gogh managed to walk back to the Auberge Ravoux where he was lodging. At the hotel his wound was dressed by his friend Dr Gachet, and his condition seemed to be reasonably stable. The following morning, the hotel owner sent a telegram to Van Gogh’s brother, Theo, who arrived by train in the afternoon. Towards evening, however, the artist’s health deteriorated and he fell into a coma and died in the early hours of Tuesday 29th July. His last words were, “The sadness will last forever.”
