I wish that Tom would stop looking at me like that. Doesn’t he realise that he is the last person in the world I would like to go out with?
I was undecided whether to use. If only or i wish , are they both right?

Yes, both are possible, but I think “wish” is perhaps more appropriate here. Perhaps “I would want” rather than “I would like”? 😀

Hi Roby.
The first part is fine but the second part is actually a question. Try again?

Much better, but I would suggest “realise” instead of “understand” and “I would want” instead of “I would like”. Think about it. 🙂

Maybe Tom would stop looking at me in that manner. Doesn’t he realise he’s the last person on earth I would want to go out with?

Very good, Claudio, except for that “maybe” starter. What you need here is an “I wish” or an “If only” starter. The conditional is correct though.

Very good, Renato. Of course “stop” should not have that final ‘s’ and “would like” requires a full infinitive afterwards (would like to go). However, as I have already said to others, perhaps here “would want” would be a bit more appropriate. 🙂

All good here, Carla. I have a couple of suggestions for possible slight improvements:

I had thought of “realise” in fact.. THANKS thanks thanks best teacher ever

It’s the wider use of “capire” in Italian that creates the problem here. “Understand” is all right in the English version but not as natural as “realise”. 🙂

If only Tom gave up staring at me that way. Doesn’t he understand he’s the last person in the world I’d like to go out with?

A good effort, Paolo, but this construct requires a conditional opening: If only Tom would stop staring…
“Give up” is more about ‘personal habits’ rather than ‘annoying actions’.
In the second part, perhaps “I would want…” would be more typical here.

Yes, I forgot to mention the understand/realise question. Of course “understand” is fine, but I think here “realise” would come more naturally to a native speaker.

A very acceptable version. Well done. 🙂
