Bene, come molti di voi avete indovinato, la forma corretta è:

They used the money TO BUY a new car.

Se hai qualche dubbio sull’uso dell’infinito qui o vuoi in ogni caso rivedere la sottile differenza tra l’suo del gerundio e quello dell’infinito in questo tipo di frase, segui questo link:
