  1. Pretending to listen quietly is a multifaceted situation. 1- to be deaf 2- to say gibberish 3- preparing what to say 4- pondering what is said (extremely rare)

    1. I’m not sure that I follow you with this reasoning, Giuseppe. Are you referring to speaking or listening, or both?

      1. I beg your pardon, but, being too synthetic we become obscure. I describe the possible explanation regarding a silent listener. He stays silent because he is deaf or because the other talks gibberish, etc.

        1. Ah! Yes, there are a number of good reasons for keeping quiet!

          N.B. Be careful with that “synthetic”, Giuseppe; it’s a false friend, I’m afraid. The right word here would be “concise”.
