Pretending to listen quietly is a multifaceted situation. 1- to be deaf 2- to say gibberish 3- preparing what to say 4- pondering what is said (extremely rare)

I beg your pardon, but, being too synthetic we become obscure. I describe the possible explanation regarding a silent listener. He stays silent because he is deaf or because the other talks gibberish, etc.
