Thanks, Tony, for your suggestions and corrections. Both articles are interesting and offer hints for understanding the incongruous behaviour of some electors. I remember a scientific research that showed as the extremist people consider only extreme positions, neglecting the nuances between white and black; furthermore, they have difficulty in solving cognitive tests.
Regarding the technique adopted by candidates, I wouldn’t underate the power of unrealistic promises: make America great again (Trump). Without Europian obstacles, the UK will be the richest and happiest country in the world (Johnson, Farage).
So, the answer to my question is that people vote emotionally and not rationally.
Consequently, my new question is: why do people use their guts instead of their brains when they have to make rational choices?
The reason could be that the allure of illusory promises doesn’t cost and doesn’t require exertion, conversely, getting unbiased information entails working hard. Therefore, the great majority of voters are ignorant (not informed), as a consequence, the ignorance will always be in power in a democratic system.

A somewhat pessimistic conclusion, Giuseppe, but I fear you may be right! Basically, if democracy doesn’t appear to be delivering the goods, then people turn to the right!
