Dettati in inglese: elementary, intermediate

When Tom first met Anne he was still studying at London University and she was a waitress in an Italian restaurant in the centre of London. At first he didn’t really notice her as he ate his pizza and looked dreamily out of the window at the passing tourists. It was only when he was trying to attract her attention in order to pay the bill that he first noticed her delightful smile and the wonderful twinkle in her eyes. It was on his fourth visit to the restaurant that he finally found the courage to ask her out. She accepted immediately, with a wide smile, and Tom’s heart went crazy. He had broken up with his previous girlfriend several months earlier and this was the first time since then that he had really felt like getting involved in a relationship again. Happier than he had been for a long time, he disappeared into the underground whistling the song “Fly me to the moon” as he danced down the stairs.

Six months before she died, my grandmother moved into an old people’s home and I visited her there when I was in Britain. She was sitting in the living room with about fifteen other residents, mostly women, half of them asleep. The room was clean and warm, with flowers and pictures, and the care assistants were kind and cheerful. The television was on, and the only other sound was snoring and embarrassing digestive noises. People only moved when they needed to be helped to the bathroom. It was depressing. Grandma talked a lot about how much she missed seeing her grandchildren, but I knew from my sister that they hated visiting her there, and to be perfectly honest, I couldn’t wait to get away myself.

Christina Sanders is a police officer in Fort William, a small town on the west coast of Scotland. She gets up at six o’clock every morning, has a shower, and takes her two dogs for a long walk. After her breakfast, fruit and cereal, Christina puts on her uniform and goes to work. Christina works hard. Her job isn’t easy and she is sometimes stressed. She thinks that it is important to do exercise and have a healthy diet. She usually has fish or pasta for dinner. She hardly ever eats meat and she doesn’t drink alcohol. Christina has a very good social life. Her friends often visit her in the evening and she cooks dinner for them. She doesn’t have a TV, but once or twice a month she goes to the cinema. Christina also loves sport. She usually works at the weekend, but on her days off she plays basketball and tennis.

I like the parks in Britain, especially Hyde Park in London. The parks are always clean and some are really big, and it’s great to go for a walk and see all the trees in the centre of a city. There’s always something interesting to see or to do. Sometimes there are festivals where you can listen to music or watch a show. But you can also relax in the parks and just read a newspaper on a Sunday morning for example. The one thing I don’t like here is the food. It’s expensive, not very good and I can’t find any good cheap Italian restaurants.

Jane woke up at twenty past six. Her bedroom was cold and she was hungry so she got dressed quickly and went downstairs to the kitchen to make some breakfast. She ate four pieces of toast and drank a cup of hot tea and then took the dog for a quick walk around the park. Before going back home she bought a newspaper and gave some coins to an old woman who was sitting on the corner of the street. Back in the house she sang quietly to herself as she made her bed and got ready to go out. Then she read the front page of the newspaper, wrote a note for her brother and left the house at about half past eight. At the bus stop she stood in the queue for about fifteen minutes and finally caught the bus just after nine o’clock. Bob met her at the bus station and together they drove to London and spent all day shopping in the city centre.
