Pronunciation Poem

Ecco una poesia che illustra, in modo giocoso, la totale mancanza di corrispondenza tra l’inglese scritto e l’inglese parlato.

Prova a recitarlo insieme alla registrazione!

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble but not you
On hiccough, thorough, slough and through.

Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird;

And dead, it’s said like bed, not bead,
For goodness’ sake don’t call it ‘deed’!
Watch out for meat and great and threat,
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt).

A moth is not a moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, broth, or brother.
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear.

And then there’s doze and rose and lose –
Just look them up – and goose and choose.
And cork and work and card and ward
And font and front and word and sword.

And do and go and thwart and cart,
Come, I’ve hardly made a start!
A dreadful language? Man alive!
I’d learned to speak it when I was five!

And yet to write it, the more I sigh,
I’ll not learn how till the day I die.

    Presumo che tu conosca già le parole
    tought, bough, cough e dough?
    Forse gli altri possono sbagliare ma non tu con
    hiccough, thorough, slough e through.
    Bravo! E ora pensi forse di conoscere i tranelli meno noti?
    Attento a heard, una parola terribile
    che sembra beard e suona invece come bird;
    E dead, si pronuncia come bed non bead.
    E per l’amor del cielo non dire “deed”!
    Fai attenzione a meat, great e threat,
    ( Fanno rima con suite, straight e debt).
    E moth non è moth in mother,
    né both in bother, broth o brother.
    E here non è in competizione con there,
    né dear e fear con bear e pear.
    E poi c’e doze, rose e lose –
    Vai a cercarle – goose e choose.
    Cork e work, card e ward,
    font e front, word e sword.
    Do e go, thwart e cart.
    Avanti, ho appena cominciato!
    Una lingua orribile? Accidenti!
    Ho iniziato a parlarla a cinque anni!
    Però a scrivere, più che a respirare. ( Ho capito il senso ma non ho saputo renderle giustizia in italiano)
    E non saprò come fino al giorno della mia morte.

    1. Ottimo lavoro, Carmela. Ho fatto qualche aggiustamento (in maiuscolo) dove mi è sembrato un po’ meno preciso.

      i tranelli meno noti?
